How AI Tutors Help With Math

What changes when a tutor can watch you work a problem — and why showing your working matters more than getting the answer.

Most maths help arrives too late to be useful.

A student gets an answer wrong, and the feedback they get is that it was wrong. But the error did not happen at the answer. It happened four lines earlier, and by the time anyone sees the final number, the useful information is gone.

That is the thing a tutor watching you work can fix, and it is why the whiteboard matters more than the chat window.

The mistake is never where the answer is

Take a problem a student gets wrong constantly:

3x+5=2x43x + 5 = 2x - 4

A student answers x=9x = 9. Marked wrong. What now?

Without seeing the working, the only feedback possible is "no, it's 9-9" — which teaches nothing, because the student did not mean to get 99. They made one specific move, and they will make it again next week.

With the working visible, the error is obvious and specific: they subtracted 2x2x from the left and added it to the right. The whole lesson is one sentence long, and it is a sentence about that student's actual habit.

What that looks like in practice

I got x equals 9 but it says that's wrong.

Let's look at line two. You've written 5 = -x - 4. Talk me through how you got there.
Student
I took 3x off both sides. So the left is 5, and the right is 2x minus 3x, which is minus x.

That's right, and it's a legal move. Now finish it — what do you get for x?
Student
5 = -x - 4, so 9 = -x, so x is... negative 9.

There it is. You had the algebra right the whole way. You just stopped one step early and read -x as x.

Notice what did not happen. The tutor never said the answer. It asked the student to walk the line they had already written, and the student found it themselves — which is the only version of this that survives to next week.

Why speaking it out loud does something

There is a well-worn idea in teaching that explaining a concept is how you find out whether you understand it. It holds for maths at every level.

A student who says "I take three x off both sides, so the left becomes five" has to commit to a claim. The moment it is spoken, it can be examined — by them, as much as by anyone listening. A student who silently writes the same line has committed to nothing and inspected nothing.

This is the practical case for a voice-first tutor over a text box. Typing maths is slow and unnatural, so students type as little as possible, which means they explain as little as possible. Saying it is fast enough that they actually do it.

Where this genuinely does not help

Two honest limits.

It will not fix a missing foundation. If a student cannot manipulate negative numbers, no amount of step-by-step help with simultaneous equations will stick, because the problem is two years upstream. And it will not help a student who does not write anything down. The entire mechanism here depends on there being working to look at. A student who does sums in their head and writes only the answer has given the tutor — human or otherwise — nothing to work with.

The habit worth building

Show the working. Not because a mark scheme demands it, but because working is the only thing that can be debugged.

An answer is a single bit of information: right or wrong. A line of working is a claim that can be checked, discussed, and corrected — and a student who writes their reasoning down has already done the harder half of learning it.
